About Our MP – The Honourable Gordon O’Connor
The Honourable Gordon O’Connor was first elected to the House of Commons in 2004 and re-elected in 2006 in the riding of Carleton-Mississippi Mills. He was appointed to Cabinet on February 6, 2006 as Minister of National Defence, and on August 14, 2007, was appointed Minister of National Revenue; and after the October 2008 election was appointed Minister of State and Chief Government Whip.
While Minister of National Defence, Gordon started the rebuilding of the Canadian Forces by securing over $32 billion in new equipment. As Minister of National Revenue he appointed Canada’s first Taxpayers’ Ombudsman, improved CRA service to taxpayers, and implemented initiatives to counter contraband tobacco.
Since becoming the Member of Parliament for Carleton-Mississippi Mills in 2004, Gordon has attended over 388 public events in his riding and 53 ‘In Your Area Days’ in communities throughout the riding. Gordon’s office has handled over 550 individual cases where constituents have needed assistance in resolving problems with the Federal government. Gordon maintains one of the best attendance records in the House of Commons. He has been present for 98% of all votes.
Born in Toronto, Mr. O’Connor received a Bachelor of Sciences in Mathematics and Physics from Concordia and a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from York University. Before being elected to Parliament, Mr. O’Connor had several careers in the private and public sectors, most notably he served Canada as a military officer for over 30 years. Mr. O’Connor has been a resident of Kanata for over 25 years. He is married with two children and two grandchildren.
